Purpose: Guidance for optimal performance of pre-painted steel roofing and cladding in tropical Southeast Asian conditions.
Key Considerations:
Climate: Prioritise heavy rainfall/monsoon drainage, intense UV radiation, high humidity, and salt spray (coastal). Steeper pitches (min. 15°, ideally ≥20°) strongly recommended for fast drainage.
Handling: Wear gloves. Use suction lifters or soft slings. Avoid dragging. Lift vertically. Store under cover, flat on level bearers, protected from rain, mud, and standing water. Stack height ≤ 1m. Minimise on-site storage time.
Installation:
Critical: Use only high-grade corrosion-resistant fasteners (Stainless Steel A4/316 recommended, especially coastal). Ensure washers are EPDM or equivalent for long-term sealing.
Strictly adhere to fixing patterns/spacings and torque settings. Wind uplift resistance is paramount.
Ensure generous side and end laps as per profile and local typhoon/wind codes. Seal end laps meticulously with high-quality, UV-resistant silicone sealant.
Use compatible, robust flashings and closures. Pay special attention to ridge, hip, and valley details.
Ensure adequate ventilation underneath to reduce condensation and heat buildup.
Cutting & Drilling: Use fine-tooth saws or nibblers. Support fully. Remove ALL swarf and debris instantly with a brush – salt/humidity accelerates corrosion at cut edges. Avoid grinders.
Maintenance: Inspect semi-annually (pre/post-monsoon). Check fixings, sealants, and flashings for integrity. Clean accumulated dirt, leaves, and debris (breeding ground for corrosion). Clean with mild detergent, soft brush/cloth, and ample clean water rinse. Promptly repair any coating damage with approved touch-up paint to prevent substrate corrosion. Be vigilant near coastlines.
Coating: Specify sheets with enhanced corrosion protection (e.g., AZ150 or AZ200 galvanised/zinc-aluminium substrate) and high UV-resistant topcoats (PVDF or high-quality SMP).
