Purpose: Guidance for safe handling, installation, and maintenance of pre-painted steel roofing and cladding in European climates.
Key Considerations:
Climate: Account for snow loads, wind uplift (EN 1991-1-3 & 1-4), freeze-thaw cycles, and moderate-high rainfall. Ensure adequate slope for drainage (min. 10° recommended, check local codes).
Handling: Always wear gloves. Use suction lifters or soft slings. Never drag sheets. Lift panels vertically, not horizontally, to avoid permanent deformation. Store flat on level, dry bearers, protected from weather and site debris. Stack height ≤ 1m.
Installation:
Use only compatible, corrosion-resistant fasteners (e.g., stainless steel A2/A4 or zinc-aluminium coated with EPDM/washer). Galvanised fasteners are generally not suitable long-term.
Follow manufacturer's precise fixing patterns and torque settings. Under-driving causes leaks; over-driving damages sheets and seals.
Maintain correct side and end laps as specified for the profile and wind zone. Seal end laps with compatible silicone sealant.
Use appropriate flashings, closures, and sealants designed for the specific profile system.
Ensure continuous support as per profile requirements and structural design.
Install breather membranes/vapour barriers correctly where required for insulation systems.
Cutting & Drilling: Use fine-tooth blades (carbide-tipped) or nibblers. Support sheets fully. Clean metal swarf/debris immediately using a soft brush – corrosion starts here. Avoid angle grinders (heat & sparks damage coating).
Maintenance: Inspect annually, especially fixings, seals, and flashings. Clean gently with mild soapy water and soft cloth/sponge. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or high-pressure jets. Repair minor coating damage promptly with manufacturer-approved touch-up paint.
Standards: Ensure products carry CE Marking and comply with relevant EN standards (e.g., EN 10169, EN 14782, EN 508).
